So the FFVIII stream didn’t happen
Live tonight on Twitch
Sometime tonight, probably around 11 or 12pm MST I’ll be playing and streaming Final Fantasy VIII. I’ve never played Final Fantasy VIII before so you’ll see me experience it for the first time. If you’re interested in checking it out, swing by my Twitch channel tonight. Or you can watch after the fact on my YouTube channel.
Thanks 🙂 Also, any advice for a first time player is welcome.
A beautiful Idaho morning sunrise drive
This morning I had to go into work to check in so on the way back I set my GoPro Hero 3+ up in the dash and let it record on the drive back. I love the color of the sky and the flat, wide open spaces that you experience while driving in Idaho. This drive is from Mountain Home AFB to Boise via Airbase road, Bypass road and I-84W.
Shot using 1080p wide angle, 60fps.
Elysium
Last night Vanessa and I rented Elysium on DISH PPV. We have a couple of PPV coupons, otherwise I probably wouldn’t have paid the $6.99 to rent it in HD (have on demand prices always been this high? There’s a Red Box across the street, but it is easier to just push a button and begin watching a movie I suppose). The concept of Elysium is in a way similar to Bioshock Infinite’s Columbia. Elysium is a space station that orbits Earth where all of the rich and powerful live. There’s green grass, trees and beautiful buildings everywhere. Everyone wears nice clothes, eats nice food and has free healthcare that can cure any disease (or even broken bones). Meanwhile Earth has become a slum. It’s dirty, people work dangerous blue collar jobs as the rich look down on them from a glass enclosure counting their earnings.
The film is not only a sort of commentary on class division (the 1% living in Elysium, the 99% down below with no way to rise up) but also of immigration. Elysium’s ruling members make certain that no one from Earth invades their paradise. Those who try to enter Elysium in “undocumented” transport ships are shot at or arrested by Homeland Security and deported immediately back to Earth. Not even dying children are allowed to reap the benefits of the miraculous med bays that can cure any ailment in a matter of seconds.
All of this is interesting, yet there are some weird things about the movie that bugged me. Matt Damon’s character’s mechanical exoskeleton device really felt out of place. It didn’t really seem to make him any more powerful than he was to begin with and only seemed to serve as an excuse to throw in some hand to hand combat with robots and a final battle with another character wearing a similar suit. Ultimately the story felt a little cliched, especially the ending you could see coming from a mile away. If you hadn’t guessed what Max’s destiny would be after the first 15 minutes or so the story of the meerkat and hippo makes sure you won’t be surprised by the ending at all.
There are some decent action scenes in the movie, and a few grotesque fleshy explosions, but ultimately the movie is nothing special. When the movie poster calls out District 9 you’d expect more from the movie. Ultimately it’s just a typical action movie that tries to be something more.
Fooling around some more with the GoPro Hero 3+
Mounted the GoPro to my visor and recorded a drive this evening. Since the camera was hanging upside down I turned on ‘upside down’ mode which made everything reverse 😛 Shot in 1080p 60fps wide angle with spot meter turned on.
Gumballs Plays: Hearthstone 001
I tried out Hearthstone for the first time today and I have to say it’s been enjoyable so far. Hearthstone is a trading card battle game similar to Magic, but Warcraft themed. It’s easier to understand and get into when compared to the Magic games I’ve played (2013 and 2014) and I’m looking forward to getting further into it. Hearthstone will be released sometime next year and will be free to play across various platforms.
Do not buy: Hamilton Beach FlexBrew K-cup brewer
So almost a year ago we purchased the Hamilton Beach Flex Brew K-cup / single serve coffee brewer. It was cheaper than a Keurig by around $50 (I think it was $80 or 90 at the time, it’s now around $50 and not worth a penny of it). It worked great for a month or two, however eventually it stopped puncturing K-cups and would spill water all over the place.
We had it replaced and now the second one will drip on and off and then spew out a steady stream of nearly clear, watery coffee at the end to fill up the rest of the cup. It ruins otherwise great tasting coffee. Even if we brew coffee grounds instead of a k-cup it’ll drip awkwardly and make watery coffee while spilling water all over the counter.
I’m hoping Wal-Mart will let us exchange this one for store credit so we can get a quality coffee brewer, not a cheap product that will require an exchange every month.
Playing with my Christmas Gift: GoPro Hero 3+ Silver
Testing out 1080p 60fps wide video.
Merry Christmas from AVGL
I hope you’re enjoying your holiday morning so far. We’re out of bed and getting ready to get together with my girlfriend’s family for breakfast. I’m thankful for all the wonderful people I get to spend Christmas with out here in Idaho as my family celebrates in Pennsylvania. Right now I’m listening to Sirius XM’s The Coffee House which is featuring acoustic Christmas songs which is quite relaxing and joyful. Have a good morning, and Merry Christmas!
Love this song and video:
