Hey there, I’ve made it to week two of this deployment, and one thing keeping going has been some amazing music. I’ve missed driving around in my car listening to Sirius XMU or Alt Nation, but fortunately I have their online service and can listen as I fall asleep (though I hate trying to sleep with headphones in!)
I just wanted to share some of my favorite songs right now. Check them out and let me know if you know of any similar songs or artists I should check out!
I first really listened to the band Twenty One Pilots during Sirius XM’s Alt Nation broadcast of their Bonnaroo performance. I had heard their songs a few times before (mostly “Not Today”) but that was the first time I listened to them for an extended period of time and I was in love.
Since then I’ve been listening to their recently released album Blurryface every night during the drive into work and the album is amazing! There’s not a song on the album I don’t love, but particular favorites include “Not Today”, “Lane Boy” and “Goner”.
If you haven’t really listened to Twenty One Pilots I highly recommend giving Blurryface a listen. It’s great!
Just popping in to share a few songs I’m really loving right now and can’t get enough of. I’ve been on a huge alternative kick lately mostly fueled by enjoying listening to Alt Nation on SiriusXM almost religiously. Here are a few songs I can’t stop listening to.
This feels like the perfect summer anthem, and I just picture sitting on the beach at night by a fire watching the reflections of the flames and the moon on the waves while listening to this song. I absolutely love everything about this song.
I don’t really know what else to say other than I just like the sound of this song. The whistling is catchy and the beat is soothing.
Last, but not least, I want to share one of my favorite music videos and songs of all time. Grouplove’s “Ways to Go”. I love the feel of both the song and the video, it’s catchy and uplifting and I can never stop watching the video.
I recently discovered Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, though I’m not sure how. I think it was from listening to Sirius XMU, but somehow or another I heard the song “We No Who U R” and my jaw immediately dropped. The slow instrumental and deep, soothing yet brooding voice stunned me. It’s incredibly beautiful music with beautiful lyrics. The first two lines of the song are as follows:
Tree don’t care what the little bird sings
We go down with the dew in the morning light
Nick Cave’s lyrics are beautiful and poetic and for some reason they occasionally remind me of T.S. Eliot and at times his sentence structure makes me think of Hemingway. It could be all in my head, it’s been awhile since I’ve studied either.
To my surprise I discovered Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds has been making music since 1983, and their 2013 album Push The Sky Away is their 15th studio album! Talk about being prolific. I have a lot of catching up to do, but as of right now I’m so in love with Push The Sky away it’s hard to listen to anything else. I’m most definitely ordering this album on vinyl, I imagine it’ll sound great on my record player.
Two of my favorite songs from the album are actually bonus tracks, “Needle Boy” and “Lightning Bolts”. The narrative in these songs and the way they’re sung just leave me in awe.
And the girls from Jubilee Street hang out their windows,
And they wave and ask me how I am tonight,
I say I’m good, I’m all right.
I just love that!
“Needle Boy” is very brooding, it gives me the chills.
Last, but not least, I’ll leave you with “We Real Cool” (love the title!)
